Within the framework of the High-Level Forum on Sustainable Development, which is being held at the UN Headquarters in New York, the Permanent Mission of Turkmenistan to the UN organized an event on the theme “Sustainable Urban Transport: Preparation for the UN General Assembly High-Level Meeting on Sustainable Transport and the model of the city of Arkadag for implementation of SDG 11”. This was reported on the website of the Foreign Ministry of Turkmenistan. Speaking to the participants, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Myahri Byashimova noted that Turkmenistan has laid the foundation for a multilateral dialogue in the field of transport sustainability, promoting relevant initiatives in the international arena. Vivid examples of this are the first Global Conference on Sustainable Transport held in 2016 in Turkmenistan, the Ministerial Transport Conference for Landlocked Developing Countries held in 2022. Myakhri Byashimova presented to the guests the new city of Arkadag, which became an indicator of the efforts made by the government of Turkmenistan in the field of modern urban planning. In this regard, the participants of the event stressed their readiness to continue to cooperate with Turkmenistan in the implementation of this large-scale project. They supported the proposal of Turkmenistan, within the framework of their co-chairmanship, to hold joint meetings of the Group of Friends of Sustainable Transport, as well as the Group of Friends of UN-Habitat, with an emphasis on strengthening the sustainability of urban transport systems. The speakers also noted the importance of the resolution of the UN General Assembly initiated by Turkmenistan on the proclamation of November 26 as the World Day of Sustainable Transport, as well as the high-level meeting of the 78th session of the General Assembly on sustainable transport that is to be held in November this year. The event on sustainable urban transport was attended by UN Under-Secretary-General, Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) Armida Salsia Alishakhbana, Deputy Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat) Michal Mlynar, Deputy Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Dmitry Maryasin, UN Deputy Director General for Industrial Development (UNIDO) Xiong Zou, Deputy-Director of the New York office of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Jamil Ahmad, Executive Secretary of the International Center for Transport Diplomacy Igor Runov, and also representatives of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs and the Partnership for Sustainable Low Carbon Transport (SLOCAT).
